Heavy Equipment Diesel Mechanic

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES

Under general supervision, performs preventive maintenance services and inspects, diagnoses and repairs waste management garbage vehicles and equipment. Repairs as needed equipment (including, but not limited to, bulldozers, backhoes, front/rear end loaders, bucket trucks, forklifts, and company cars).

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS, RESPONSIBILITES, AND TASKS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Other minor duties may be assigned.

  • Works under limited supervision and selects from written instructions and established procedures to accomplish assigned tasks.
  • Performs repairs and assigned preventive maintenance services.
  • Performs inspection, diagnosis and repair of electrical, hydraulic, suspension, brake, and air systems on vehicles and equipment.
  • Utilizes vehicle computer electronics systems to interpret failure modes to initiate or assign repairs.
  • Estimates time and material costs on vehicle repairs and requisitions new parts.
  • Performs all work within Standard Repair Times (SRTs).
  • Performs service calls for emergency breakdowns.
  • Conducts safety checks on vehicles.
  • Repairs as needed equipment (including, but not limited to, bulldozers, scrapers, backhoes, front end loaders, yard trucks, farm tractors, forklifts, and company cars).
  • Diagnoses and repairs differentials, hydraulic systems, motors, transmissions, drives, air conditioning systems, and electrical systems.
  • • Completes required paperwork utilizing fleet maintenance software program associated with repairing vehicles, documenting parts usage, and accounting for repair times.
  • Assists senior Mechanics in the completion of project work.
  • Reviews complete or assigns repairs identified on Driver Vehicle Inspection Reports.
  • Maintains a clean, safe work area in compliance with Corporate / MOSHA Standards and performs all work in accordance with established safety procedures.
  • Other duties and tasks as assigned.

REQUIRED SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES

Thorough knowledge of the methods, tools, and equipment including electronic equipment used in the repair or light automotive passenger cars, trucks, passenger buses, construction, and maintenance equipment; through knowledge and skill in the use and operation of shop tools and machinery, such as drills, presses, grinders, micrometers, brake relining and drum grinding machines, welding equipment; ability to diagnose the more common defects in the drive trains, chassis, and other components of automotive equipment; ability to defect by inspection any worn or broken automotive parts; ability to keep records of repairs and service operations and to make reports; ability to adapt available tools and repair parts to specific repair problems; ability to interpret and work for sketches, diagrams, and installation and repair charts; ability to follow oral and written instructions accurately.

WORKING CONDITIONS

PHYSICAL:

  • The exertion of up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force to constantly move objects.
  • Climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, running, pushing, pulling, lifting, twisting, fingering, grasping, handling, smelling, seizing, holding, controlling, feeling, and assuming cramped or unusual positions.
  • Vocal communication for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly, and quickly.
  • Color vision to identify and distinguish colors.
  • Visual acuity for depth perception, night vision, peripheral vision, preparing and analyzing written or computer data, use of measuring devices, operation of machines, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities.
  • Hearing to perceive information at normal volumes of spoken word, to receive information through oral communications, and/or to make fine distinctions in sound.

ENVIRONMENTAL:

  • Possible exposure to indoor and outdoor conditions including extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, vibration, electrical shock, and radiant energy.
  • Contact with water or other liquids; or non-weather-related humidity.
  • Possibly working near and handling mechanical parts and corrosives.

• Experience: Two year(s) of relevant work experience

DESIRED EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION

• Education: High School Diploma or GED

• Experience: Five year(s) of relevant work experience

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS:

• Valid Driver’s License and must have a clean driving record

• CDL License

• ASE Certified Mechanic or ability to obtain certification within 12 months

OTHER SIGNIFICANT FACTS:

• Must be at least 18 years of age.
